My Favorite Lens

Your favorite lens, or the lens you use most, defines your style.

My favorite lens has always been the 50mmf/1.2.  I never thought much about why I liked it until now. It was just the lens I most often naturally gravitated toward using.

A few reasons why I like the 50mmf/1.2:

- It picks up most accurately what I see with my natural eyes.

- It allows me to be closer to my subjects.

- It’s not too bulky.

- It is a prime lens so it forces me to physically get up, move, and get creative.

- The AF (auto focus) is fast.

- Low aperture allows for low light photos without flash

- Photos taken with the 50mmf/1.2 look most organic and natural to me.

Thanks for sharing! I love every single one of your posts and you inspire me everyday to practice and get better at photography.

Hoping to get your advice on lenses as you mentioned above: What are your thoughts on the 50mm f/1.4 and how big of a difference is there to the f/1.2? Also, if you have a 50mm, do you think that covers mid-range well enough or would you suggest still needing a mid range like the 24-70mm?

Thank you!

I don’t use it as much but it is by far my most favorite lens; Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS MK2. I love shooting action shots and this lens is very sharp even for portraits.

Thanks for your tips/comments about the Canon 50mm f1.2L. I’m looking into getting that or the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS Macro.

If I could have one lens and one lens only, it would be the 50mm1.2. With most things, I think spending the extra money for better quality is worth it. The 1.8 is a great starter lens but if you plan on going further I would invest in the best. :)

Christine – If you prefer more flexibility I would suggest the 24-70. I shot with that as my primary lens for a few years!
