85mm f/1.2 Lens – Dave Baez and His Daughter

I tried a new lens today – the 85mm f/1.2.

It is fantastic for portraits!  I typically use the 50mm f/1.2 for portraits but the 85 allows you to step back to give your subjects some space (I like to be close but understand that sometimes space can be good), and the 85 will also give you a tighter (narrower frame) shot.

Dave Baez and his daughter June.

If you take a lot of portraits, I would highly recommend the 85mm f/1.2 but if you are looking for more of an all around general lens, I think the 50mm f/1.2 is more suitable. :)

So would you say a better general lens is the 50 or the 85?

The 50 is definitely a better general lens. I’m going to add that into the blog post now. :)
